A cover signals genre before it signals story
People choose books from the cover in seconds, and the first thing it must communicate is what kind of book this is — readers look for their genre first. A beautiful cover that does not signal genre gets scrolled past by exactly the people who would have liked it.
Ebook covers are seen as thumbnails
In online stores, covers display very small. Long titles in thin type become unreadable at that size. Shrink the cover to thumbnail size and check the title still reads — if it does not, it needs redoing.
Check the title and author name
Image models still misspell, particularly proper nouns and names. Read every letter before using it — a misspelled author name is a mistake readers notice immediately.
