Why budgets work per month and per category
A single "do not exceed this much" figure rarely helps, because once you exceed it you still do not know why. Splitting by category makes the culprit obvious and lets you fix the right thing next month instead of tightening everything at once.
Setting budgets you can actually keep
Base them on what you really spent last month, not on what you wish were true. A budget set far below reality collapses in the first week and then gets ignored entirely. Starting from real numbers and easing them down in the categories you genuinely mean to control lasts much longer.
